Rinnai Hot Water Wisdom- Recirculation
With a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater featuring ThermaCirc360™ hot water can re-circulate through your pipes regardless of how your plumbing is configured.
•No storing hot water AND no standing pilot •Condensing models are Energy-Star qualified •Even more savings if Circ-Logic recirculation is utilized Rebates & tax credits help lower costs
The key concept behind efficiency is that you’re only using gas when you’re heating hot water. Someone once said, “would you leave your car running in your garage just in case you had to use it?”Of course not but that’s kind of what we do with tank water
heaters…. Condensing models are Energy star rated and units with Circ-logic, which is integrated recirculation are even m
ore efficient – we’ll cover recirc in a moment. The image above shows a study using DOE data – you can see that when compared to tank water heating, tankless can save hundreds of dollars a year
Rinnai tankless water heaters are known for their reliability. In fact, the table shows how a tankless water heater, when maintained, can last over twice as long as a common tank water heater. So think of the old saying pay now or pay later….replacing a tank every 5-10 years doesn’t really make it a cheaper spend while all tankless components are replaceable.
In fact, this is what the inside of many tanks look like after just a few years. Repeated heating draws out the minerals and sediment in the water and deposits it at the bottom of the tank.
The sediment takes up valuable storage space, meaning less hot water available, and running out of what's available more quickly, as your tank ages!
Tankless water heaters are also much smaller than tanks – in fact for new builds, this is really a big deal – every square inch of a new home has a value to it and tankless water heaters can open up valuable space for other purposes, up to 15 square feet.
•Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters are about the size of a suitcase
•Outdoor models are also available that require no added venting (installation cost saving)
Redundancy is one of the lesser known, but equally important features of tankless- this is very important for commercial applications. Instead of having a single large tank, using multiple tankless creates redundancy should there be an issue – so the business or home doesn’t lose all of its hot water at once. This is critical in the food service and hospitality industries as outages can close down the business until hot water is restored.
How a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Works
See how a Rinnai tankless system heats water only when it is needed. No more heating unused water!
Virtually all Rinnai tankless models come with a temp controller. Pictured below is the flagship controller, the MC-91. There are others with more bells and whistles.
You can attach multiple controllers to a single water heater – which allows you to set the temp in certain areas of the home. Rinnai controllers also give fault and usage data as needed as well – to make maintenance and troubleshooting easier.

Additional controllers that are available are the MC-195T and the MC-601
There’s a misnomer that tankless units are hard to maintain. That’s really not the case – especially with the new Rinnai products out there now. The two primary items to keep in mind are: •The inlet water filter (which is in the cold-water supply) should be cleaned periodically •And flushing – which is dependent on water quality. Some units never need flushing while others do need multiple per year
Cleaning Water Inlet Filter
If you have the water softener, you only need to do is a hand flush one a year for 30seconds

Rinnai Sensei can vent with 2 pipe 3” or even 2” PVC / CPVC. We still offer our 3/5” polypropylene concentric vent.
We now also offer a 2/4” concentric which is less expensive, lighter and easier to handle.
Concentric means a pipe within a pipe. 2/4 and 3/5 refers to the diameter of the inner and outer pipes.
Dip switches have been removed for the Sensei model. All parameter and performance configurations are done via the controller. Dip switches remain for non-condensing models.
Warranty Rinnai has one of the most robust warranties in the industry. We claim a less then 1% failure rate for newly installed product.
